Tokyo Akihabara General Store “Sofmap”

In Akihabara, the hub of Japanese subculture, you can discover various general stores. Many of these stores primarily sell character goods related to manga, animation, and figures. Sofmap is one such store, and what sets it apart from other general stores is its offering of a diverse range of products, including books.

“Sofmap Merged with Bic Camera”

Sofmap was absorbed and merged into Bic Camera, a retailer specializing in electronic appliances. Initially, Sofmap started as a specialty retailer in Tokyo selling computers and related accessories. However, in 2012, it merged with Bic Camera. Despite the merger, Sofmap continued to use its name, and you can still find signs with “Sofmap” across various locations in Japan.

“Sofmap in Akihabara”

I stumbled upon the Sofmap store while walking down the street. Originally, I had no plans to visit, so I didn’t have high expectations. However, I found many interesting products, and there were several items I wanted to purchase.

On the first floor, there was a variety of Gundam-related model kits. Personally, I wasn’t particularly interested as I hadn’t watched Gundam, but I still appreciated the displayed works.

Upon going up to the second floor, I found a book section. There were various books on display, and I came across a book that made me contemplate making a purchase. It was an illustration book related to “Slam Dunk” by Takehiko Inoue. After much contemplation, I decided not to buy it, mainly because of its large size.

“Purchase of Spirited Away Paper Theatre and Trump Cards”

Instead, I opted to buy Studio Ghibli-related products on the first floor. I purchased a “Paper Theatre” puzzle assembly product featuring scenes from Spirited Away. Additionally, I bought a set of “Trump Cards” featuring various illustrations from Spirited Away.

The Sofmap store in Akihabara turned out to be more diverse and entertaining than expected. While I didn’t plan to visit with high expectations, it offered a wide range of unique products.
