Pohang Beach ‘Songdo Beach’

Songdo is a place name that can be found in various places, and you can also find Songdo in Pohang. The name Songdo originated from the name of the island that was located at the entrance where the Hyeongsan River meets the East Sea, called “Bundao (분도)” and the original administrative district name of the area around the beach, called “Songjeong-dong (송정동),” each taking one character. Even now, most of Songdo-dong is composed of islands and is connected to the mainland through four bridges.

“Pohang Songdo: Beach”

In Pohang Songdo, there is a beach. In 1931, during the period of Japanese colonial rule when Pohang was elevated to a town, it was officially opened as a beach, gaining a nationwide reputation as a leisure destination in the white sandy pine forest.

However, after 1968, when a steel industrial complex was established in this area, its beautiful appearance gradually faded, and Songdo itself became urbanized, encroaching on the pine forest. In the late 1970s, to prevent the disappearance of the white sandy beach due to two large tidal waves, a breakwater was installed.

Subsequently, the loss of the white sandy beach accelerated due to typhoon damage, and eventually, in 2007, the beach completely lost its function and was closed.

“Pohang Songdo Beach White Sandy Beach Restoration Project”

The restoration project for Songdo Beach was designed in 2008. In 2009, it was included in the government’s basic coastal development plan, and in 2013, the restoration project began. The project includes the installation of erosion prevention facilities in the water to weaken the force of the waves, preventing the loss of sand from the seabed and white sandy beach, as well as artificially creating the beach.
