Hong Kong Sheung Wan – Macau Ferry Terminal

After a 4-night, 5-day trip around Hong Kong Island, it was time to move on to the next destination, Macau. The chosen mode of transportation from Hong Kong to Macau was by ferry, departing from the Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong. The reason for choosing the ferry was that it offered the most straightforward route.

“Ways to Travel from Hong Kong to Macau”

When it comes to traveling from Hong Kong to Macau, or vice versa, there are essentially two methods. In the past, the only option was using a ferry, but with the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, a land route has also been established.

  1. Traveling by ferry via the Hong Kong – Macau Ferry Terminal
  2. Traveling by land via the “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge”

Among these options, I chose to take the ferry this time. When returning from Macau to Hong Kong, one can use the land route via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

“Getting from Hong Kong Sheung Wan Terminal to Macau Ferry Terminal”

This time, I selected the route from the Hong Kong Sheung Wan Terminal to the Macau Ferry Terminal. Since I had pre-purchased the ticket online, I only needed to use the ticketing machine at the ferry terminal.

The vessel I boarded was a TurboJet, departing from Hong Kong Sheung Wan and heading towards the Macau Ferry Terminal. Please note that if you intend to go to the Taipa area in Macau, you should use CotaiJet.

“Departure Procedure from Hong Kong to Macau”

Since it was a departure from Hong Kong to Macau, I went through the departure process in Hong Kong and entered Macau. At the Hong Kong Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal, the departure procedure was conducted electronically and was quite simple compared to the immigration process.

There was no separate baggage inspection, and there was no need to fill out an entry and exit card. Once the departure procedure was completed, I could board the ferry heading to Macau.

“Storing Luggage on the Ferry”

If you choose to send your luggage in advance as checked baggage when boarding the ferry, there will be an additional fee. However, there’s no need to worry if you haven’t sent your luggage in advance. There is a place on the 1st floor of the ferry terminal where you can store your luggage, and there is no additional charge.

If you have luggage, simply inquire with the staff. Follow the staff’s instructions to leave your luggage and then proceed to your seat.

“Approximately 1 Hour of Travel Time”

After boarding the ferry, you will hear announcements and then start your journey to Macau. Saying goodbye to Hong Kong and heading to Macau brings both a sense of regret and excitement. While on the ferry, you can enjoy the sea view between Hong Kong and Macau. It took about an hour to arrive at the Macau Ferry Terminal.

Moreover, you could use the internet on the ferry. Personally, I had already purchased a SIM card in advance that worked in both Hong Kong and Macau. Although there were some areas with unstable connectivity, having a SIM card that worked in both Hong Kong and Macau allowed me to use the internet and pass the travel time without getting bored. (However, I later found out that even though I had purchased a SIM card that was supposed to work in both Hong Kong and Macau, it didn’t work in Macau, so I had a bit of trouble.)

“Arrival at Macau Ferry Terminal”

The travel time from Hong Kong to Macau wasn’t very long. Just when it started to feel a bit tedious, I arrived at the Macau Ferry Terminal.

Now, it was time to go through the Macau immigration process again, as I was entering Macau and beginning my journey in this new destination.
