Hong Kong Sai Ying Pun, ‘Ying Kee Noodles’ – A Michelin-mentioned Gem

Sai Ying Pun in Hong Kong is a relatively recently popularized area located on the western side of Hong Kong Island. Although it’s only a couple of subway stops away from the Central district of Hong Kong, it exudes a local atmosphere.

In the Sai Ying Pun area, there’s a street called High Street. This area also has a distinctly local ambiance, and it’s known for outdoor escalators similar to the Mid-Levels Escalator. That’s why it’s sometimes nicknamed ‘SOHO.’

For our meal that day, we decided to dine at a restaurant mentioned in the Michelin Guide, which can be found locally. The restaurant is called ‘Ying Kee Noodles,’ and it’s not very well-known among Koreans.

“A Restaurant with a Local Vibe, Everything Written in Chinese Characters.”

Ying Kee Noodles is a restaurant that emanates a local atmosphere. From the signboard to the menu, everything is written in Chinese characters. Ordering was quite challenging due to the absence of an English menu.

Even among the local Hong Kong residents, there are not many who speak English fluently. Particularly, most of the people running such restaurants are often not proficient in English. So, even ordering food wasn’t easy. Since the menu was entirely in Chinese characters, it was difficult to place an order. Eventually, I managed to place an order by pointing at the pictures on the wall.

“Meat Noodles”

Thanks to this, I ended up ordering a meat noodle dish whose name I couldn’t discern. It was a dish with meat on yellow noodles. While it’s possible to customize the noodles, due to the language barrier, I ended up ordering the default menu.

Hong Kong cuisine tends to be on the salty side, and this place was no exception. Nevertheless, it was a great option for a simple breakfast, offering a taste of the local atmosphere in Hong Kong.

Ordering wasn’t easy due to the language barrier, but thanks to that, I had a memorable and unique experience.
