In Japan, it’s easy to find various general and variety stores. It’s convenient for shoppers as they gather and sell various items in one place. “Village Vanguard” is one such general store chain that operates as a bookstore.
In reality, Village Vanguard doesn’t focus much on books. Instead, it mainly deals with clothing, miscellaneous goods, and daily necessities. Despite being classified as a bookstore, it stands out due to its diverse product range.
“Village Vanguard” at Namba Parks in Osaka
Since Village Vanguard operates as a chain, you can find it in various locations. When I visited in 2018, I explored a store located in Americamura, but when I revisited Osaka in 2023, I found that particular store had closed its doors.
Instead, the branch in the Namba area at “Namba Parks” was still there, maintaining its presence. The Namba Parks branch was located on the 5th floor, easily accessible near the escalators, making it relatively easy to find.
“A Store Where You Can Explore Various Goods”
At Village Vanguard, you can explore various miscellaneous goods. It seems to showcase products ranging from daily necessities to creative items without setting strict boundaries. While you may encounter many quirky items, the overall evaluation is consistent: “There are many interesting products, but not many worth buying.”
This time around, visiting Village Vanguard, I had a similar impression. There were plenty of unique products, but not many that sparked a desire to purchase. However, it was still a good place to spend some time observing and discovering interesting items.
“Different Vibes Compared to Americamura in 2018”
Compared to the location in Americamura in 2018, there seemed to be a difference. Americamura felt more free-spirited and open, allowing for a greater sense of finding creative and unique items. On the other hand, the Americamura in Namba Parks, being situated in a large shopping mall, gave off a more standardized and commercialized vibe. It felt more like a place conforming to the standards of a large shopping mall rather than a venue overflowing with individuality.

Unless each location has a slightly different concept, it made me wonder if five years had played a role in altering the essence of Village Vanguard to this extent.
Overall, while there may not be many worthwhile items to purchase, Village Vanguard remains a valid destination for witnessing unique products. If you’re looking for a place with eccentric and individualistic items during your travels, it’s still a good place to explore.
