Kyoto Gion – Kamo River View

After exploring the Kyoto Arashiyama area, we took the Hankyu train to Kawaramachi Station and then headed to the Gion district. Since we had some time before dinner and were eager to relax, we planned to take a brief break at a cafe with a view of the Kamo River.

Despite moving to the area recommended by the hotel staff, we couldn’t find a suitable cafe, possibly due to our group not locating one or the timing being a bit ambiguous. Most establishments were still closed, leaving us unable to find a suitable place to rest.

Nevertheless, this gave us the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll along the Kamo River in Kyoto. Although we initially walked through side alleys, we couldn’t immediately appreciate the view of the Kamo River.

Kyoto – Famous for the Geisha District in Gion

The Gion district in Kyoto is well-known as the Geisha district. Geisha, similar to Korea’s gisaeng, were traditionally Japanese entertainers who mainly engaged in performing arts. They played roles such as pouring drinks and entertaining guests with traditional dances or songs during social gatherings.

Even today, you can occasionally spot individuals working as geisha in the Gion district. Additionally, for those interested, it’s possible to experience services in places where geisha frequent.

Gion District – A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

The Gion district exudes an old-world charm, but it’s more than just a place with an aged atmosphere. It subtly combines traditional and modern elements. This unique blend of tradition and modernity makes it a popular travel destination, even for Koreans.

Kamo River – Flowing Through the Gion District

The river that flows through the Gion district is the Kamo River. Although not a large river, it boasts a gentle landscape and provides a hillside space within the city for Kyoto residents. Particularly, it’s known for offering a place to appreciate the evening scenery. The outdoor terraces along the Kamo River are open from May to September, creating a serene atmosphere.

Even though our trip to Kyoto was in late September, the daytime temperatures reached around 28-30 degrees Celsius. However, in the evenings, it dropped to a comfortable 23-24 degrees Celsius. This allowed us to experience summer-like weather during the day and enjoy cool evenings. Walking along the river, feeling the cool evening breeze, was a special experience.

The pleasant weather in the evening attracted many people to the riverside. It was a Friday evening, and many individuals were out to unwind after work. We observed street performances and various events creating an energetic atmosphere. Overall, it was a delightful day, enjoying the outdoor activities in Gion.
