Shinjuku – Tokyo’s Vibrant District

Shinjuku is a well-known area in Tokyo, recognized by many in Korea as well. It is a part of Tokyo Metropolis, hosting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which serves as the city hall. Known for its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, Shinjuku is always crowded with a diverse array of people.

Particularly noteworthy is Shinjuku Station, boasting five railway companies and an astounding 11 intersecting lines. Regarded as one of Japan’s leading stations alongside Tokyo Station, it holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s busiest railway station, with the highest number of passengers.

“Skyscrapers and Crowds in the Bustling District, Shinjuku”

Around Shinjuku Station, you’ll find numerous high-rise buildings, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere of the area. As a place constantly bustling with people, Shinjuku is divided into an office district to the west and an entertainment district to the east. Additionally, the renowned entertainment district “Kabukicho” is located in Shinjuku, known for its lively nightlife.

Moreover, Shin-Okubo, Japan’s largest Korean town, is conveniently situated close to Shinjuku.

“Various Works Set in Shinjuku”

Shinjuku has often served as a backdrop in various media. Many films and animations have featured Shinjuku as a setting. The restaurant depicted in “Midnight Diner,” for instance, is set in the densely packed area of Kabukicho within Shinjuku.

Makoto Shinkai’s animated film “5 Centimeters Per Second” also showcases Shinjuku in its third part. Additionally, the popular work “Your Name” includes scenes set against the backdrop of Shinjuku.

“Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory”

In Shinjuku, you can find the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, housing an observatory on its top floors. The building, with a significant height of 243 meters and 48 floors, consists of two towers. Positioned in the business district to the west of Shinjuku Station, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s observatory provides a free vantage point to enjoy the surrounding views, making it a great place to visit.

Shinjuku offers various attractions beyond the observatory. You can explore “Omoide Yokocho,” a narrow alley packed with small shops, among other big and small points of interest.
