Osaka Castle, designed primarily for defense, features defensive structures throughout its premises. The castle boasts formidable defenses with double moats surrounding it.
Adjacent to these moats, you can find watchtowers scattered around Osaka Castle. These watchtowers are open to the public, allowing tourists to explore and learn about their historical significance.
“The Watchtower of Osaka Castle: Tamonyagura”
Among these watchtowers, one that I visited is located on the north side entrance of Osaka Castle, known as ‘Tamonyagura.’
Initially, I mistakenly entered through the exit instead of the main entrance, causing some confusion among the staff inside.

Upon entering the watchtower, a staff member provides explanations. They deliver detailed explanations in Japanese to Japanese visitors and brief explanations in English to foreigners. Perhaps due to language barriers, the English explanations were much shorter, providing basic details like “shooting guns and throwing stones through these holes.”. Additionally, they mentioned that the watchtower, positioned at an elevated location with narrow openings, makes it difficult for enemies to spot, while from inside, one can have a clear view of the surroundings.
For those wanting to explore Osaka Castle thoroughly, the watchtower ‘Tamonyagura’ is a worthwhile visit. It provides insights into the history of Osaka Castle.
