In Kyoto, there’s a well-known yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) specialty restaurant called “Mishimatei.” It has earned the top spot in the yakitori category on “Tabelog,” a Japanese gourmet listing site.
“Featured on Battle Trip Kyoto Edition – Mishimatei”
This restaurant was also featured on KBS’s travel show, Battle Trip, during an episode where Kim Shin-young and Mimi explored Kyoto. With a history spanning over 100 years, Mishimatei is renowned for serving delicious yakitori. However, due to its popularity, getting a reservation can be challenging, and even making a reservation is considered a difficult task. Moreover, the prices are relatively high, with an estimated minimum cost of around 100,000 won per person.
“Serving Yakitori Since the Meiji Era (1873)”
Established in 1873, Mishimatei has maintained its location for over a century, continuously offering yakitori. Despite the steep prices, many are willing to pay for the experience of dining at this historic establishment.
“Mishimatei Main Branch and a Branch at Takashimaya Department Store”
The main branch of Mishimatei can be found near Nishiki Market in Kawaramachi. Additionally, in Kawaramachi shopping street, you’ll discover Takashimaya Department Store, where a “Mishimatei Branch” is located.
Though the atmosphere may differ slightly from the main branch, you can still order the same delightful dishes at the department store. The restaurant is situated on the 7th floor of Takashimaya Department Store.
“Three Yakitori Sets Available at Takashimaya Department Store Branch”
While the main branch offers more sets, the branch at the department store has three sets available. Prices vary between sets, with the most expensive priced at 9,720 yen per person, followed by 6,480 yen, and the last set at 2,484 yen.
The last set is more affordable because, unlike the other yakitori sets where staff grill the skewers and inform you of the perfect timing to eat, with the last set, you have the responsibility to grill and enjoy them yourself.
“Visit to the Restaurant, But the Desired Set Was Sold Out”
During this visit in the evening, the set menu priced at 6,480 yen that the author desired was already sold out. Unfortunately, it meant leaving without having the meal.
Nevertheless, knowing the location this time, the author expressed a desire to revisit for a meal on the next trip to Kyoto.
