Kyoto Kawaramachi “Shijo-dori Shopping Street”

In the heart of Kyoto lies the district of Kawaramachi. Serving as a central axis of Kyoto, it is a bustling street densely packed with numerous shops.

This area is situated around Kawaramachi Station, and there’s a street called Shijo-dori that runs through the east and west, centered around the station.

“Shijo-dori Shopping Street”

Many shopping streets surround the Shijo-dori street, and in the vicinity of Shijo-dori, you’ll find other notable attractions of Kyoto. Stretching from the Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto’s kitchen, to the east towards Gion District and even connecting to Yasaka Shrine, Shijo-dori forms a lively and diverse corridor.

Shijo-dori Shopping Street exudes a slightly sophisticated atmosphere compared to the serene ambiance commonly associated with Kyoto. Unlike the typical Kyoto vibe, this area features a considerable number of high-rise buildings, offering a distinctive contrast. It’s also a place where you can enjoy one of the rare nightscapes in Kyoto.
