On the first night of this Tokyo trip, I stayed at a capsule hotel called ‘9h Nine Hours Takebashi.’ Although I had heard about capsule hotels in Tokyo, this was my first experience, and I decided to try it out during the first night of the trip.
The location was close to Tokyo Station, making it convenient, but there were relatively few dining options or places of interest nearby, which was a bit disappointing.
“Tokyo Takebashi Chinese Restaurant – Kinfukugen”
Since it was the first night in Tokyo, I needed to have dinner, and it would be great if I could enjoy a simple beer. However, I couldn’t find other places around, but right next to the hotel, I discovered a restaurant called ‘Kinfukugen.’
Curious about what a Japanese-style Chinese restaurant would be like, and with limited options, I decided to give it a try.
“Japanese-Style Chinese Restaurant”
During a previous trip to Osaka, I wondered about the differences in Japanese-style Chinese restaurants compared to those in Korea. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to explore back then, but this trip provided a new experience.
The menu offered a variety of dishes, but unfortunately, there was no English or Korean menu. At that time, my Japanese was only at a very basic level, allowing me to communicate minimally with the staff—basic words like ‘gyuniku’ (beef), ‘butaniku’ (pork), and ‘toriniku’ (chicken). The staff only spoke Japanese and Chinese, adding a language barrier.
“A Restaurant with Japanese and Chinese Menus Only”
In the end, we managed by asking about each dish, mainly settling on ‘toriniku’ (chicken) as my British friend expressed interest in trying that. However, what arrived was not the chicken dish we anticipated but a dish featuring chicken giblets, leading to quite a bewildering moment.
In the end, we ordered gyoza (dumplings), a chicken dish, and chāomian (fried noodles). Despite the disappointment with the main chicken dish, we found the gyoza and other dishes to be quite tasty.
