Representing Singapore’s culinary identity, both “Chilli Crab” and “Black Pepper Crab” are must-try dishes when visiting this city-state. Situated on a small island at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore boasts a rich abundance of seafood, offering diverse culinary experiences.
Singapore’s Chilli Crab and Black Pepper Crab
Chilli Crab and Black Pepper Crab stand out as quintessential Singaporean dishes. While Chilli Crab features a sauce-soaked presentation, Black Pepper Crab offers a less saucy experience, allowing the richness of the crab’s flavor to shine.
During my recent trip to Singapore, I indulged in Chilli Crab at Jumbo Seafood on the first day and savored Black Pepper Crab at “Red House” on the final day.
Red House at Robertson Quay
Red House, a franchise restaurant found throughout Singapore, was our choice for the last dinner in Singapore, located at Robertson Quay alongside the Singapore River. During our visit, the Robertson Quay Red House was undergoing renovations, but luckily, the restaurant remained open for dining, despite the somewhat chaotic atmosphere.
Crab Pricing Determined by Weight
Similar to other establishments, Red House prices its crab dishes based on weight. Therefore, it’s essential to inquire about the price before ordering. Additionally, checking the crab’s origin is advisable, as prices may vary significantly depending on its source.
On this particular evening, we opted for a relatively affordable crab dish, choosing the Black Pepper Crab at around SGD 78 per kilogram. This translated to approximately KRW 65,000. As two adults and a child dined together, the cost was reasonable, totaling SGD 101.6, with an additional service charge bringing the final amount to around SGD 119.6.
Gluten Puff With Greens
Alongside the Black Pepper Crab, we ordered a side dish called “Gluten Puff With Greens,” a bamboo-inspired creation that complemented the main course. Additionally, we ordered steamed white rice, which paired well with the seasoning from the Black Pepper Crab.
In the end, our total expenditure for the evening was around SGD 119.6, equivalent to approximately KRW 100,000. Opting for individual menu items rather than set meals provided a satisfying dining experience at a reasonable price.
With this enjoyable last dinner in Singapore, we concluded our trip, heading back to the airport through the city’s vibrant night.
