In Pohang Songdo, the retired naval ship “Pohangham” is anchored. This ship, leased to the Navy at no cost, is no longer used for its original military purpose. Instead, it serves as an exhibition space for civilians.
“Pohangham Experience Center”
Opened on Pohang Citizen’s Day, June 12, 2010, the Pohangham Experience Center, funded by the same sources as the Cheonanham, provides a space for citizens to experience maritime life and shipboard living, along with a section commemorating the late Lieutenant Commander Han Joo-ho, and a corner to honor the 46 fallen crew members of the Cheonanham. It serves as a place for citizens to indirectly experience naval life and foster a sense of national security.
“A Ship of the Same Source as Cheonanham, Pohangham”
Pohangham, which sank in front of Baekryeong Island in the Yellow Sea on March 26, 2010, due to a North Korean submarine attack, is a ship of the same source as the Cheonanham. It is a 1,200-ton-class patrol ship, the mainstay of the Navy, which honorably completed its mission of defending the territorial waters for nearly 30 years and retired.
“Exploring the Interior of Pohangham at the Pohangham Experience Center”
At the Pohangham Experience Center, visitors can see the actual retired naval ship up close and personal. Despite seeming relatively small, the ship accommodates 110 crew members.
You can directly observe living spaces and work areas, gaining indirect insight into the efforts of soldiers serving in the Navy. As it is conveniently located near Songdo Beach, Songdo Bamboo Theme Park, and Character Maritime Park, it is a great place to explore while visiting Songdo.
In particular, by touring the actual interior of the Pohangham, visitors can indirectly experience the challenging living conditions of Navy personnel. The viewing hours are as follows:
