Pulmujil was a small bookstore located in front of Sungkyunkwan University in Hyehwa-dong. It had occupied its spot in front of the university for a long time. One day, I came across an article stating that Pulmujil was now being run by Jeon Beom-seon, the leader of the group “Jeon Beom-seon and the Yangbans.”
The previous owner of the bookstore in front of Sungkyunkwan University has since moved to Jeju Island and now operates a separate bookstore named “Jeju Pulmujil.”
“Jeju’s Charming Little Bookstore: Jeju Pulmujil”
Jeju Pulmujil offers a completely different atmosphere compared to typical urban bookstores. While it may be smaller than the previous Pulmujil bookstore located underground in front of the university, it has transformed into a fresh and stylish space.
Moreover, nestled within a small building that harmonizes with Jeju Island’s scenic beauty, this bookstore presents a unique ambiance distinct from urban bookshops. Walking along the paths between the small stone walls that characterize Jeju, you’ll stumble upon this charming bookstore.
“A Wooden Structure, A Space to Quietly Contemplate”
Upon entering Pulmujil, one is greeted with a sense of sophistication in its cozy space. Though not particularly large, it exudes a tranquil atmosphere that is simultaneously traditional yet not entirely old-fashioned. This bookstore emanates a distinctive charm, offering a feeling of vibrancy amid its peaceful setting.
Perhaps due to its location, nestled among nature rather than in a bustling city, the bookstore carries an extra special emotional resonance.
“Building Connections with Many”
Jeju Pulmujil is operated by Mr. Eun Jong-bok. While I personally didn’t have many chances to get to know him well, I had acquaintances who were close to him. Perhaps because it’s a bookstore run by a friend of a friend, I felt a certain familiarity during my first visit. Mr. Eun Jong-bok himself warmly welcomed me, making it feel as if I had returned to my hometown.
“Hosting Reading Gatherings”
Pulmujil hosts gatherings centered around reading. While I used to think of books as something to be enjoyed alone, as time went by and I grew older, I came to realize that these gatherings weren’t just about discussing books, but rather using books as a means to connect with others. During my trip to Jeju Island, I couldn’t help but think it would be a wonderful opportunity to set aside some time to visit Pulmujil and potentially forge new connections.
Jeju Pulmujil served as the practical final destination of my Jeju trip. I wished I could have stayed longer, but the time to catch my flight was approaching. Even though my visit was brief, it allowed me to experience the warm hospitality of Mr. Eun Jong-bok. If I have the chance to return to Jeju Island for another trip, I would definitely revisit this place.
Even if you don’t have a personal connection with Mr. Eun, if you have an interest in books, consider visiting Jeju Pulmujil. You may find yourself attending a book gathering and making new connections on Jeju Island.
