Scholarship students dispatched by the U.S. Department of State are staying with host families in Korea. As I am responsible for the program, I often have to visit the students’ neighborhoods. Many students from the U.S. experience Korea’s harsh seasonal changes and winter weather, often falling ill. When this happens, I frequently accompany them to the hospital.
When a student staying in the Suyu area fell ill, I looked for a nearby hospital. Strangely, there seemed to be more oriental medicine clinics than general hospitals in Suyu.
“Su Oriental Medicine Clinic in Suyu-dong, Seoul”
Since the student was not in a severe condition and only had symptoms of a simple cold, we decided to visit a nearby oriental medicine clinic. The clinic we visited was called “Su Oriental Medicine Clinic.” It had the typical feel of a neighborhood clinic.
“A Clinic with a Kind Doctor”
I usually don’t write about the hospitals I visit, but because students are scattered throughout Seoul and I often have to visit unfamiliar hospitals, I decided to record this positive experience. The clinic exceeded my expectations with a very kind doctor. The friendly male doctor, impressed by the student’s dedication and the fact that they were suffering from a cold while studying abroad, decided not to charge for the consultation, only for the medicine.
The doctor prescribed two days’ worth of herbal cold medicine and generously added a few more medicines for free. Despite the student not having registered for Korean health insurance yet, the total cost was only 10,000 KRW.
Given the friendly service, I think this is a place we would visit again if the student falls ill. It felt like a warm and welcoming neighborhood clinic with a kind and attentive doctor.
