“Mangwon Market” in Seoul, located near Hongdae, is a well-known market in western Seoul famous for its diverse food offerings. Its proximity to Hongdae and easy access via public transportation make it a popular destination, especially among the younger generation. Notably, this market is renowned for its various street foods and snacks, and there’s a cafe within the market named “Café M” where you can enjoy the food you purchased from the market.
“Seoul Mangwon Market, Café M”
The café you can find within Mangwon Market is called “Café M,” with the “M” likely derived from “Mangwon.” What sets Café M apart from typical cafes is the ability to consume various foods purchased from Mangwon Market inside the café. Generally, many cafes don’t allow outside food, but Café M offers freedom in this regard.
However, there’s a condition: each person visiting the café must order one drink. The prices for drinks are generally reasonable, comparable to mainstream coffee shops. The impressive aspect is that, with just one drink order, you get the opportunity to taste various foods from the market.
“A Café Where You Can Taste Market-Purchased Food”
Café M, being located within Mangwon Market, is easy to find. Its strategic location allows for a convenient flow between purchasing market foods and enjoying them at the café. Although not very spacious, accommodating around 30 people, there are also outdoor tables. However, these outdoor options are limited, so it might not be suitable for large groups. For groups of around 20-30 people, reserving seats in advance with the café could be a viable option.
“The Day We Visited with Hong Kong HKCT Students”
On this day, students from Hong Kong’s HKCT University Korean Language Department visited Mangwon Market and then Café M as a group. Each person bought their desired foods from the market, gathered at the café, and shared the purchased foods. Approximately 20 people suddenly arrived, causing a bit of confusion for the café staff. Yet, thanks to prior communication, the event proceeded relatively smoothly. Of course, dealing with a sudden influx of about 20 foreigners who may not be fluent in Korean might have presented challenges.
Nevertheless, we managed to occupy Café M with the Hong Kong students and spent the evening enjoying our meal. If you plan to visit Mangwon Market, especially to purchase various foods for a group meal, this café is a great place to consider.
