After exploring the northern part of Nara Park, including Todai-ji and related sites, I crossed the park and headed south. In the southern part of Nara Park, you can find “Ukimido (浮見堂),” a pavilion built on the pond.

“Ukimido (浮見堂) in the Southern Part of Nara Park”
Ukimido is located in the southern part of Nara Park. It’s a hexagonal pavilion with an elegant roof made of cedar bark. Situated on the “Sagi-ike” pond, Ukimido offers a tranquil setting with its reflection mirrored like a mirror on the calm surface of the pond.
During the lighting events from September to September, you can witness Ukimido, Todai-ji, and Gofuku-ji illuminated in golden colors. Additionally, during the Obon period in early August, a candlelight event featuring candles on the pond and small boats adds to the enchanting atmosphere.

“A Pavilion in Harmony with the Pond”
The walk from Todai-ji to Ukimido took approximately 15 minutes on foot. Although not a considerable distance, towards the end of this journey, the fatigue became noticeable. However, the unique charm of Ukimido, combined with the thought that I might not have the chance to visit again, motivated me to reach the pavilion with determined steps.
Upon reaching Ukimido, the initial impression was somewhat ordinary, but observing it from a distance revealed a picturesque scene. It is an excellent spot for capturing reflective photographs against the backdrop of the serene lake.
While Ukimido offers boat rides for a fee, no one seemed to be boarding during my visit. Despite its relatively small size and the tiredness of the journey, Ukimido proved to be a place with a certain charm, worth exploring as part of your visit to Nara Park.
