After taking the Torokko train from Kyoto Saga Station and returning to Arashiyama Station, I explored Ogurayama Pond and naturally passed through the bamboo forest. As I walked through the highlighted bamboo forest in the Arashiyama area, lunchtime approached.
Before arriving in Arashiyama, I had listed a few restaurants to check out, and I decided to visit the restaurant “Kijuro,” which specializes in steak rice bowls and is conveniently located.
“Kijuro in the Arashiyama Area Shop Street”
Kijuro can be found on the street where the Arashiyama area shops are located. It has a fairly sophisticated and clean atmosphere, making it relatively on the expensive side. You can expect to pay around 3,000 yen to 4,000 yen per person, which is roughly 30,000 to 40,000 won.
Although it is a bit pricey, the ambiance is charming and upscale, making it a great place for a family to enjoy a stylish meal. While the steak rice bowl might seem somewhat modest compared to dishes commonly found in Korea, experiencing Japanese culture through its cuisine is an integral part of the journey.
“Waiting is Standard During Lunchtime”
In Japan, it’s uncommon to find large-scale restaurants. Most are small establishments operated by individuals. Considering the high population density, it’s natural to wait in line at restaurants, especially at popular tourist spots like Arashiyama, during mealtime. Our group also waited patiently, adding our names to the list and securing a table after about an hour.
“Atmospheric Restaurant, Kijuro”
Kijuro is relatively spacious compared to other restaurants I visited during my Japan trip. However, the continuous flow of people meant that waiting was inevitable. The interior was tastefully decorated, creating a clean and luxurious atmosphere. The high ceiling prevented the space from feeling cramped, and the outdoor garden visible through the windows added to the comfortable ambiance. In a way, it embodied the typical atmosphere of a Japanese restaurant.
Interestingly, Samurai armor was displayed inconspicuously in a corner of the restaurant, providing an additional point of interest.
“Steak Rice Bowl”
The dish we ordered that day was the steak rice bowl. The price varies depending on the quantity, and what we ordered cost around 4,000 yen, approximately 40,000 won. While it might not be the type of dish you would crave at this price in Korea, I considered it an opportunity to explore different cuisines during my travels. The taste was satisfying, but due to the cost, it might be challenging to visit frequently unless it’s a special occasion like a family trip.
