In Nara Park, you can explore the world’s largest bronze Great Buddha, located in Todai-ji (Eastern Great Temple). While most people tend to appreciate the bronze statue at Todai-ji’s main hall and then move on, if you venture a bit east from Todai-ji, you’ll discover “Nigatsu-do (February Hall)” and “Hokkedo (Sangatsu-do) (Eastern Great Temple Lotus Sutra Hall),” also known as Sangatsu-do. While Nigatsu-do is free to enter, there is an admission fee of around 500 yen for Hokkedo.
“Todai-ji’s Nigatsu-do and Hokkedo”
Todai-ji Sangatsu-do is the oldest building in Todai-ji, constructed between 729-733, predating the establishment of Todai-ji. It is also called Sammon, which means “Mountain Gate,” as it sits on a steep hill. The national treasure Nigatsu-do is a two-story wooden hall situated on a steep hillside near Sangatsu-do. This hall is famous for the Shuni-e ceremony held on the 15th of the second month in the lunar calendar, earning it the name “Nigatsu-do.”
To reach Hokkedo, visitors need to climb stairs, and it is considered the oldest structure at Todai-ji, dating back to 729-733. The hall is renowned for the Shuni-e ceremony that takes place during the 15th of the second lunar month, also known as Nigatsu-do.
“Ascending the stairs brings a breathtaking view at Nigatsu-do”
Although climbing the stairs to Nigatsu-do may require some effort, the panoramic view of Todai-ji and Nara city from the wide stage called Butai compensates for any physical exertion. Stone pillars on both sides of Nigatsu-do’s stairs, varying in height based on donations from believers, enhance the unique atmosphere of the place.
Especially for Nigatsu-do, the ascent is rewarded with a stunning view. Despite the effort, the beautiful scenery of Todai-ji and Nara city unfolds, making the climb well worth it. Due to its elevated location, Nigatsu-do also benefits from a refreshing breeze, providing relief on hot days.
