Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan

Sensō-ji (金龍山浅草寺, Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji) is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It is Tokyo’s oldest temple, and one of its most significant. Formerly associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after World War II. Adjacent to the temple is a five-story pagoda, the Asakusa Shinto shrine, as well as many shops with traditional goods in the Nakamise-dōri.

The Sensoji Kannon temple is dedicated to Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and is the most widely visited spiritual site in the world with over 30 million visitors annually.

“A Temple built in 628 by Brothers of Fishermen”

Another name for Sensoji is “Asakusakannonji((淺草觀音寺)” or “Kannonji(觀音寺)”. It is said to be the name that comes from the worship of “Aryavalokitesvara(觀世音菩薩) in Sanskrit.

Sensoji is said to be a temple built in 628 by brothers of fishermen to enshrine the statue of the “Aryavalokitesvara(觀世音菩薩)” which was caught in a net from Sumida river.

Kaminarimon

“Kaminarimon, The main gate of Sensoji Temple”

Kaminarimon is the main gate of Sensoji Temple. The official name is “Hujinraijinmon (風神雷神門)”. “Hujin” means “The God rules the wind” and “Raisin” refers to “The God rules the lightning”

In the centre of Kaminarimon, there is a large lantern. It is said to have a height of 3.9 meters, a diameter of 3.3 meters, and a weight of 700 kg. It is said that after making a frame using bamboo imported from “Tanba Region” in Kyoto, around 300 sheets of Japanese traditional paper are attached around it to make a lantern.

The paper attached to the lantern was made from Japanese Oak from Fukui Prefecture. Since 1971, it is Manufactured at a lantern house called Takahashi Lantern in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City in Japan, and every 10 years newly manufactured.

“The Smoke from the Jar, Jokoro(常香炉)”

At the centre of Sensoji Temple, you can find a jar that blows out smoke. And around the Jar, people are standing and breathe and inhale the smoke.

The smoke is called “Jokoro”. Japanese people believe that this smoke will be helpful to our body. Especially, when you get hurt, people believe that this smoke will heal the wounds.

Nakamise-dori(Street)

“Nakamise-dori(仲見世通り), A street that lots of shops you can find.”

Near the Sensoji Temple, you can find a street filled with lots of shops, that is called “Nakamise-dori”. Here, you can find a lot of souvenirs which repenting Japan.

And on the other side of the street, you can find a lot of shops selling street foods. You can try some delicious snack as well here.
